Biology
In our biology lessons we build up on our knowledge of the digestive system that we learned in the previous session. We delved deep into the digestive system, its factors and different organs along with corresponding enzymes and elements. To strengthen our knowledge about the function of salivary amylase, we visited the biology lab and conducted an experiment and understood how temperature affects functioning of amylase. Our first formative assessment was conducted during this month which we discussed in class to rectify our mistakes. We discussed the homework for the expected responses to the questions based on the command terms. We have all enjoyed learning and being active throughout this whole month.

Physics.
We started our MYP Science journey last month with learning important science skills; where we explored the learner profile attributes using examples from the world of science like Enrico Fermi, Sir J.C. Bose, Faraday etc. We discussed and learnt their definitions and the term started with skill building sessions wherein we discussed specific lab skills, command terms and assessment criteria. We did an activity called Think-Puzzle-Explore to help us think critically about conversion of energy from our daily life. We explored examples related to our unit on energy consumption- discussed the global contexts, key concepts and related concepts. How climate changes occur due to convection currents and control our weather was interesting. We started discussing Criterion B and understood how the planning and inquiry processes go hand-in-hand. Most recently, we compared and contrasted electricity generated from dams and wind turbines which helped build our understanding of how different forms of renewable energy are produced. This was also interconnected with our Humanities unit, in which we looked at how we can save the world from a lack of resources. We are ready to probe further into the concept of energy & its huge impact on our lives, especially climate, so I think all of us are excited to explore this interesting unit !

Individuals & Societies
Taught by:
Jayshree Sonthalia
In Individuals and Societies, we looked at different images and graphs related to agriculture and had insightful class discussions around food insecurity. We developed our thinking skills through answering questions related to case studies, helping us make real-life connections to food production issues. Afterwards, we were introduced to the food production system discussing the different stages that it is involved in. We understood the difference between food loss and food waste through collaborative research. Moving on, we compared More Economically Developed Countries with Less Economically Developed Countries, discussed their food supply and distribution aspects. Using our compare and contrast skill to figure out how to help both categories of countries. During this process, we became knowledgeable and delved deeper into the subject-specific vocabulary. We also explore the food insecurity prevalent in Less Economically Developed Countries by choosing a specific country and presenting their challenges accordingly. We used our research skills to learn more about this through the United Nations Food Programme guidelines. This greatly improved our understanding on the topic of food production. We showcased our research through making posters and presentations and sharing it with each other. Additionally, we had an interesting MUN-inspired debate on the impact of Genetically Modified Crops on humanity. Lastly, we focused on the different lifestyle diseases caused by making poor food choices.

Mathematics
Taught by:
Naveen Kumar
In our recent maths classes, we explored Simple Interest and Taxes like GST (Goods and Services Tax) and Discounts. Simple Interest is all about money growing or shrinking, using Principal, Rate, and Time. We practised a lot, like solving money puzzles. GST is a tax we see when shopping. We learned to calculate it with GST = (GST Percentage x Cost of the Item) / 100.Discounts are like shopping prizes. We practised finding discounts with Discount Amount = (Discount Percentage x Original Price) / 100.Our teacher asked us about our maths experience. And to demonstrate our understanding, we had the chance to present our newfound knowledge in class using PowerPoint presentations. This made us feel like maths superheroes, gearing up for real-life money adventures!

Phase III: Capable: Deeksha

French Emergent Phase 1
After acquiring knowledge of various parts of the house and a portion of grammar based on the current unit “Home Sweet Home”,  we started “les tâches ménagères” (household chores) in the month of September.  To familiarize us with the topic and to improvise on our vocabulary, our teacher made us do multiple quizzes and online worksheets which further helped us in preparing for the upcoming Formative Assessments and perform better. Out of all the activities that we did, the one we all truly enjoyed attempting was a collaborative task wherein we were asked to divide the household chores  in three sections like chores we like to do, chores we don’t mind doing and chores we would never want to do at home. Our collaborative, creative thinking and communication  skills came into practice while we worked on our common interests and later presented the activity in class. In addition, another reason for us to love our French lessons is the way revisions are held in the form of role plays, quizzes, online practice worksheets and homework discussion.  One such activity was “Spin the wheel” in which we were divided in two groups, turn by turn we spined an online wheel following which we had to answer the question that appeared. To conclude, LA has never felt this interesting and we look forward to our classes each day.

French Emergent Phase 2
In our ongoing exploration of the ‘Home Sweet Home’ unit, we’ve transitioned from house components to a deeper focus on household activities.  This month, we’ve enriched our understanding with enlightening videos on chores, enjoyed captivating French songs about domestic life, and even uncovered French versions of well-known English songs like ‘BéBé Requin’ (Baby Shark). We recently had a surprise in-class activity to reinforce our vocabulary and language structure knowledge. We participated in a spirited roleplay competition, forming two teams, one taking on the roles of landlords and the other as tenants, engaging in lively debates about various housing issues. Additionally, a fun and insightful Padlet activity had us assigning household tasks to our peers, reinforcing our understanding of household chores and effective communication. Homework discussions further enhanced our comprehension.

French Capable Phase 3
This month, we discussed various articles that examined French and Indian stereotypes and superstitions. This helped us hone our research and inquiry skills. Based on these articles, we brainstormed about the differences between superstitions and stereotypes and their negative influence on individuals and communities. Moving forward, we had a session with a guest teacher from France who introduced us to important festivals and days in French where we learnt the dates of these festivals, their importance to French people and the unique ways in which people celebrate these festivals. Then, we worked on some grammar topics – specifically tenses. We also learnt about the difference between connectors and cohesive devices and some cohesive devices we can use to enhance our writing.

Hindi Capable
We started off the month in Hindi by practising our sentence phrasing/framing skills. We were given simple words which are used in every single sentence we speak daily. With these words, we had to write a paragraph consisting of these words, helping our sentence framing skills. Next, we delved deeper into our unit of culture and community, and we answered the age-old question; Should we adopt practices from diverse cultures into our own or not? Next, we discovered the reason for the change in cultures and the influence of media on distinct cultures. We also wrote a reflection of the Chandrayaan 3 landing on the moon and what we would have done if we boarded the mission. Finally, we learned about travelogue and how it impacts diverse cultures as our unit focuses on culture and community.

Visual Arts
Taught by: Neha Narayan
In September, we continued our Unit: Nature Morte and created drawings and paintings in the style of the artist Michale Craig Martin. Our artworks were based on research. We carefully observed the artist’s work using the See, Think and Wonder thinking routine and then individually selected one of his artworks for further investigation. We identified and analyzed the elements of line, colour, shape and form in the selected artwork and then researched about the art-making techniques and processes used to create it. We also found out about where, when and why these artworks were created. This helped us write about the context of creation and the artist’s intention. After this research task, we began working on our own drawings and paintings representing objects with bright colours and bold lines.

Music
Taught by:
Mr. Nehemiah David Rao
This month, we explored the various scales on the piano, such as the “C” and the “D” scales. We learned the specifications for the piano scales and the formula to develop a major scale ourselves. We practised identifying how a chord can be played and derived on an online piano website. By learning these skills, we can effectively make our own composition for task 3 and understand the very fundamentals of music. We also learned about high pitch and low pitch, enabling us to be able to control our own pitch while singing. We then experimented with our own voices, with one person singing in high and the other signing in low. These two skills will be a huge help when creating our own composition in task 3.Once we’d mastered these skills, we discussed the elements of music; melody, harmony, rhythm, tempo, dynamics, timbre, form, texture, expression, articulation, phrasing, and finally, time signature. The class discussion was engaging and informative. Now that we had understood the role of each element, we were ready to start working on our task 1, where we had to analyze one original composition by two artists each and explore the elements used in said composition.

Theatre
Taught by: Jaspreet Singh Walia
Our main target during this month has been to understand the various production elements involved in theatre design and how to plan our play around it. We focused on two methods in this process. First was to design a plot and then adjust the use of design and production elements to fit the story. The second method was to see the production elements and then design the story to be able to judicially make use of the resources available. Both methods have had a mixed set of pros and cons and using our learning, we are now listing down the production elements that are essential to any creative showcase. In the coming weeks, we are also planning on creating a play with multiple inputs of production ideas, in order to discuss the feasibility and challenges of theatre design.
